Today is the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, which was initiated by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR). This day celebrates how people and communities around the world are reducing their exposure to disasters and raising awareness of the importance of containing the risks they face. The day focuses on the seven goals of the Sendai Framework, this year under the theme of "Good Disaster Risk Governance". Many disasters can be contained or prevented if appropriate risk management and risk reduction strategies are in place. The Bonn Network International Civil Protection and Disaster Risk Reduction contributes to the implementation of the Sendai Framework.
Building and sharing knowledge and experience is an important part of good disaster risk management. Therefore, we pool expertise by bringing together risk management experts from different disciplines and levels and supporting their cooperation. In addition, we aim to inform the interested public about developments in disaster risk management by organizing workshops and public lectures and by publishing newsletters. Another goal of our work is to promote the principle of sustainability, since sustainability plays an important role in strengthening the long-term resilience and resilience of societies and systems.
